4 Spring 2026 Tweaks That Elevate Simple Outfits
How I'm updating my wardrobe for Spring without starting over
Pastels, scarves, elevated neutrals - these are the spring trends that actually feel like me at 46. I used to dread wardrobe refreshes because I had just gotten into a groove of what I liked wearing, and the thought of overhauling became stressful. I didn’t want to shop more; I wanted to bring my spring wardrobe in with intention. How did I want to feel this spring? Light, fun, and effortless. Using those words as my anchor, I began to sort through my clothing and accessories to really get this spring vibe going.
It’s a soft reset - four small, intentional tweaks that make my existing wardrobe look more polished, modern, and quietly expensive without having to do a “spring haul”.
These tips aren’t loud or trendy. They’re statements that have an impact. They’re the kind of subtle shifts that make people lean in and say “You look so put together!” And yes, I’ve linked every piece I’m recommending into my ShopMy so you can see exactly how they work in real life. ;)
The Scarf Hack
If you’ve been reading my work for a while, you know that scarves are having a moment. Whether they’re tied around the waist (new styling), or around the neck (classic), it’s a must-have accessory for spring.
Why it works for women over 40:
They’re chic but also cool, which is rare. Something is usually trendy OR classic, but this is both.
Personal example:
The last time I was in NYC, helping stylist Tara West dress models on the set of The Sherri Show, I rocked my favorite outfit formula, which is a basic top and pants, a cool jacket, and a scarf belt. When it works, it works! (The pic doesn’t do my favorite tassel necklace justice, btw!)
ShopMy Recommendations:
Amo denim jeans “Billie So Good”
Quick Styling Tip:
Add a brooch to it! If you don’t have a brooch, use a single earring. A little glitz goes a long way.
Elevated Neutrals with a Pastel Pop
Now, remember you’re talking to a girl who thinks leopard is a neutral, but another fun way to zhuzh up navy or brown is with a gorgeous pastel. Make it springy without looking like you need an easter bonnet.
Why it works for women over 40:
Pastels on their own can be a little too saccharine. When you pair say, butter yellow with chocolate brown, it adds a level of sophistication to keep it from looking either too childish or too grandma’s garden.
Personal example:
I wore matcha green with stark black and white last week (see my pajama article and my matcha article) and it was such a striking combo!
ShopMy Recommendations:
Quiet Culture “Take a Pause” Wasabi Set
White House Black Market Striped Belt
Quick Styling Tip:
Here are my favorite neutral-plus-pastel combos: lilac with brown, seafoam with navy, pink with camel and ice blue with cream.
The Asymmetrical Layer
Asymmetry is really hot right now. The way I’m seeing it mostly is with asymmetrical slip dresses. Sometimes people wear them over pants or jeans. I myself do not, but it’s my solemn duty to pass along trends. It doesn’t mean it’s my thing! I also think the side-tied-scarf belt is a very chic way to add asymmetry, as you’ve seen several times in this article.
Why it works for women over 40:
It adds interest. A lot of times, outfits at our age can get very boxy - blazer, wide leg, etc, but adding an element that’s got a slope to it really moves the eye and helps make an outfit look more intentionally undone, which translates to cool.
Personal example:
Like it or not, the “millennial tuck” is a thing of asymmetry. Again, it breaks up an outfit and adds a little something unexpected for the eye. It’s a controversial pick, but occasionally it works! This is what I wore to Vogue’s Wuthering Heights premiere and I got exactly a zillion and one compliments.
ShopMy Recommendations:
(Not cropped into picture but still there) Brown Leather Pants
Quick Styling Tip:
Asymmetry is fun with patterns, as styled above. A quick tip on pattern combination, is pick one color in both pieces, but make sure one piece is a larger pattern and another is smaller.
One Structured Piece over Soft Basics:
I love a structured piece. Give me a crisp blazer over a slouchy sweatshirt any day of the week. But I also need soft and light in the spring, so this little contrast hack is great for “light jacket season”.
Why it works for women over 40:
We want to look professional, but also relaxed. Overly “office-core” and falling too far down the athleisure rabbit hole can be either harsh or sloppy. This brings balance that we all need.
Personal example:
As you know, I’ve been wearing a lot of Encircled lately, and throwing a cute light jacket over my dressy sweatpants has been my favorite go-to look lately. Military jackets are dominant right now, and even though I jokingly refer to this jacket as “one drummer short of a black parade”, I’m obsessed with it.

Quick Styling Tip:
Here is a great opportunity to do the 2x2 trick - 2 elevated picks and 2 casual. Rinse, lather, repeat.
These tweaks aren’t about chasing trends, but honoring the woman you are now and making getting dressed feel easier and more joyful…because isn’t that such a SPRING thing to do? I’d love to hear what you’re trying first, or what small shift has made the biggest difference in your own wardrobe. Drop it in the comments because these conversations are my favorite part!
